What I want out of magazine writing

I want to be able to write creatively and for longer than 90 seconds at a time. I am actually a digital video major and for the last two semesters I have been helping to write and produce the sports segments for KCRA Channel 3. Although a great gig for someone as into sports as I am, seems like most people from the east coast fall into this category, I have sadly discovered that the TV news thing isn't quite for me. Don't get me wrong going to games and conducting interviews is a blast, but back at the station turning an entire game into a 30 second highlight isn't the type of writing that I'm interested in.

I hope this class will help me to refine my writing technique and also allow me to explore the possibilities that are offered through the medium of magazines. I had the oppertunity to spent last week in Hawaii, a fabulous place, and while hiking the jungle and sitting on the beach I couldn't stop thinking about how great it would be to be able to travel and write as a living. I'm not to sure how plausible this endeavor would be, it must be pretty popular goal, but hopefully this class will clear up the picture a bit. As this is my second foray into the realm of higher education I could certainly use a little career guidance.

I have lots of friends that blog and talk about blogging, but for me this is my first attempt so I'm going to leave it as is and look for some constructive criticism for the future.

I envy your video skills, as I think multimedia will be the way to go for journalists.

I'm interested to know more about your experience at KCRA.
